Techniche 2007 was officially inaugurated after the lighting
of the lamp ceremony. Among thosewho were present on the occasion were
Chief Guest Himanta B Sarma, Minister of State for Health and Family
Welfare, IT, Science and Technology and Guwahati Development, the Director
IIT Guwahati, and others. Mr Sarma is also the MLA of Jalukbari. In his
speech, he praised the efforts of the organizing team for arranging a fest
of such magnitude, with around 250 colleges from all over the world,
including 50 schools. He also stressed on how India should not only be an
instrument of implementation of ideas from abroad. The Director, IIT
Guwahati, Dr Barua, appraised the students for their efforts in promotion of
technology. He also urged them to pursue research. The
event concluded with the launch of the intranet campus radio by the
Hon’ble chief guest. The institute was also privileged by being showcased
the first broadcast of this one-of-its-kind venture. Mr
Uppaluri, Chairman Technical Board, concluded the event with a vote of
thanks, also announcing that the labs were open to inquisitive school
children to learn and observe how IITG functions. Manual
Robotics The
most awaited, anticipated and participated event of the techniche 2007- the
tech fest of IIT GUWAHATI, began in full steam this morning at 10 am and it
is going to be held throughout the next 3 days non stop. Around 130 teams
have registered for the event and many more are still expected to register
in the next 2-3 hrs. Out of these 130 teams,70 teams from outside IIT
guwahati have registered. These teams have come from various engineering
colleges from all over the country. Teams have come from many NIT’s like
NIT Bhopal, NIT Patna, NIT Silchar etc and also from other colleges like GIT
Jaipur etc. The
problem statement of this event is to make a robot which is capable of
moving inside a maze and picking up a ball from the centre of it and coming
back out, while all the time
being out of the reach of the ghosts(opposition teams). The participants
have shown a lot of enthusiasm and dedication in making their robots which
is quite evident from the various innovative ideas and designs they have
come up with to construct their robots from scratch. This
event has been a huge success according to one of the organisers and it has
received lot of response from both the participants as well as the viewers
which can
be judged from the constant clapping and whoopings and the heavy crowd that
can always be seen in this event. It is expected that the same tempo will
continue for all the three days and this event proves to be one of the
biggest successes of techniche 2007. Technothlon
Techniche,
has also witnessed participation from over 50 schools from near-and-afar in
the event Technothlon. It is our ultimate aim to inculcate innovation in the
nascent minds of our nation’s youth. Technothlon
showcased several events, most notably, lecture by Mr Subhash Basumatary,
Director of SAI Guwahati, on promoting sports in the country addressing some
key features that impede the progress of organised games in India. He went
on to speculate on how the scenario can be improved, by suggesting a
ten-point policy. “Puzzologica”
witnessed participation from an overwhelming 42 teams of class 11/12
students who had to solve 10 challenging puzzles in the span of 2 hours. On
emerging from their quiz, they expressed their admiration for IITG’s
campus and ascertained how the event tested their locical and reasoning
skills to the extremum. Likewise,
“Prototype” saw participation from Class 11/12 students. While one team
had constructed a sound collection and amplification system modelled for the
armed forces, another team had an excellent presentation on ‘magic
squares’ in which they arranged numbers so that they magically added up to
the same value in every column/row. The diplays silently professed the drive
in the youth to take our nation from striving to developed in accordance
with the wishes of our last president, Dr Kalam. CSI
(Crime Scene Investigation- Biotech
Related Event) The
latest addition in the long list of events in this year’s Techniche CSI
(Crime Scene Investigation ). Problem statements involved analysis in
various BIOTECH labs like DNA, fingerprinting, serology and toxicology. It
attracted a huge participation including teams from IIT Delhi, various NITs
and colleges from Hyderabad, Mumbai. The problem consisted of a summary of
various cases of crime which included press cuttings, interviews of
suspects, clues related to DNA prints. In short, the various teams
turned into detectives and had their task cut out to get to the real
culprit. Aqua
Husstle Aqua
Husstle, a part of manual robotics, saw participation of more than
hundred teams of which more than half were from outside Guwahati like
the NIT’s, IT-BHU,etc. In this event the robots act as warships constantly
fighting for their territory. The teams which spends the maximum time in
their opponents’ territory is the winner. Innovations from young minds
were seen in terms of the boat design and in the mechanisms of swift
movement in water such as the WIRELESS BOAT which turned out to be a great
attraction. High spirits were shown by Mujahid Ahmed from Ghaziabad, a
physically challenged student who participated with high enthusiasm in all
the robotics events. The main event will be held on 8th and 9th September
where the top teams fight for the top honours. Speech
by KIRAN BEDI Beginning
with an intriguing question as to why people compromising with their
conscience are successful..? or why dishonesty has reaped benefits for those
who adopted it and left the others battling it out for sustenance? Dr.Kiran
Bedi baffled the audience at IIT-Guwahati
which expected her to speak out on cyber crimes. However,
she felt glad visiting the part of the country which is visited not by
choice but generally on basis of compulsion. Dr.Bedi reflected on
the beauty that exists in the untouched natural environment of the
north east to the beauty that exists inside its inhabitants, everything that
starts from simplicity and politeness but finds a dead end with an honesty
labelled with a question mark. Making
reference to the students of IIT G Dr.Bedi pointed out the general trend
among the youth of India and not just IIT, i.e. the pursuit of individual
gains rather than the collective gains. She pointed out the flaws in our
education system which makes India still deficient in its human resource
despite possessing bright and fertile brain power of the youth. The demands
of Indian intellectuals be it doctors or engineers is not only in research
and industry but the society as a whole depends on them. The dreams of
making India a superpower by 2020 will still sound a distant dream until our
youth was imparted education to educate others, empowered those who have
been impoverished and reach out to those millions of under privileged
Indians who have never reaped the fruits of our recent earned freedom. Dr.
Bedi stressed on the fact that the youth of India should live for the
greater good of their country. The premier institutes of education that the
govt. has provided will not solve their purpose until they yield youth full
of energy to change things for the better and having the attitude,
perseverance and most importantly courage to do what is right and question
what is wrong. It is very easy to lead a normal life in which nothing
changes. For eg the ethics being questioned and no. of divorces on the rise.
The
issue of the students community in India losing out on their ‘patriotic
quotient’ makes it all the more worthwhile to ponder over the system of
education we’re having right now. She urged the director and the faculty
of the institute to imbibe more of a social perspective as a part of the
curriculum and add a personal reading hour to make them read about
great people.
