Golden future
THE beginning has been made. North-East has
started showcasing its potential to the world, especially to the eastern
neighbours. The response is also on the expected line. Countries like
Thailand have shown interest in investing in North-East. Business ties
between North-East and those countries are centuries old. But due to some
unavoidable circumstances the ties could not flourish to the expectations of
the people. If North-East has to remove the tag of backwardness, reviving
the age old ties with the eastern is a must. Earlier NE was economically
stable because of trade with countries like Myanmar, Thailand, Singapore and
others. After years, time has come to revive the glory of North-East by
taking some bold steps to enhance its trade connections with the neighbour.
The effort was on for quite some time. It received a boost as Prime Minister
Dr. Manmohan Singh was quick to realize the fact and announce the Look East
policy. In this context, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee
rightly stated that the NE region of the country is a region into whose
progress and development the country can dovetail its ‘Look East’
policy. With the gradual integration of this part of the country ‘through
cross-border market access,’ the NE states can become the bridge between
the Indian economy and South-East Asia, the fastest growing and dynamic
region in the world, he said. Mr. Mukherjee who was delivering a keynote
address at a three-day conference on India’s Look East Policy and the
challenges for sub-regional cooperation said that the country’s Look East
policy was based on the vision of the first Prime Minister of the country
Late Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru to make India the pivot around which issues
relating to economic and security in South East Asia would have to be
considered. Thus a golden future is beckoning the North-East.
