EC promises free, fair elections in Tripura

Tripura unit of BJP has decided to contest all the Assembly seats in the upcoming elections in Tripura slated for early next year. The party would not go for alliance with any political party in the next Assembly elections, said BJP State unit president Sudhindra Choudhury. Claiming that the party would give a tough fight to its opponents – ruling Left Front and opposition Congress and INPT, he said that the BJP will field candidates in 20 seats reserved for STs. “The party has been gradually gaining ground even in tribal belts as party membership has gone up to 23,000 to 44,000 due to constant efforts of the party leaders in interior areas”, he said adding that party will emerge as a major political force in the State. He criticized the ruling Left Front for its total failure to provide good governance to the people. “Corruption and nepotism have become an integral part of the Manik Sarkar-led Government”, he said. Choudhury alleged that the Left govt is trying to prevent movement of BJP leaders by not providing escort while touring interior areas. “Whenever, the party seeks escort for its leaders, police decline to provide the same”, he said. “People of the State are frustrated with the performance of both Left Front and Congress-TUJS. Now they want to reject them to usher in a new dawn in the State”, he said.

Here it may be recalled that BJP president Rajnath Singh in his recent visit to Tripura asked the party leaders to go all out in the next elections and assured that the Central leadership will render all possible help.

Meanwhile, Chief Election Commissioner N Gopalswami has assured that the coming elections in Tripura would be free and fair. The assurance came in the backdrop of a meeting between the CEC and a five-member Congress delegation in Delhi. Sources said that the team met Gopalswami and submitted a 17-point proposal to ensure free and fair elections in Tripura slated for early next year.

The proposals include deployment of adequate security personnel in each booth so that voters can exercise their votes freely and stringent measures to prepare error-free electoral rolls. The Congress leaders also demanded posting of observers to oversee the proposed summary revision of voters’ lists. The CEC gave a patient hearing to the TPCC leaders during a 35-minute discussion, said former Minister and TPCC spokesman Ratan Chakraborty. “The poll panel has assured that it would leave no stone unturned to ensure free and fair elections”, he claimed.
