Army trying to convince militants to lay down arms

Altogether 16 cadres of the proscribed Dima Halam Daogah (DHD-J), who were seeking asylum at Manipur’s Churachandpur district, surrendered before HQ 27 Sector, Assam Rifles.
A release issued by the Press Information Bureau (Defence Wing) said due to efforts made by the Army, successes in convincing militants to surrender were noted in Manipur and Mizoram. Giving details of an attempt to make militants lay down arms, Defence Wing officials said on September 18, troops received information about DHD (J) cadres hiding in Churachandpur.
The Army spread out its intelligence network to gain further information about the cadres. Detailed analysis of intelligence, meticulous planning and pro-active launch of operations resulted in locating the ultras.
After having contacted the cadres, deliberate efforts were made by 27 Sector Assam Rifles to persuade the cadres to surrender. While explaining them the benefits of surrender, they were made aware about the schemes of rehabilitation of the Central and State Governments.
After prolonged negotiation the militants agreed to lay down arms and so far about 16 cadres have surrendered. They were sent out of Manipur for imparting vocational training. This was the second surrender initiated by 27 Sector Assam Rifles, 57 Mountain Division. Earlier in July, 64 SPLA cadres surrendered before Mizoram Government. In both the incidents, 27 Sector Assam Rifles had played a vital role to motivate the cadres and make them lay down arms.
The Defence Wing further said the Army has always welcomed any militant group, which has come up to lay down arms and join the mainstream. Concrete steps have also been taken, so as to help the cadres merge with the mainstream by providing them vocational training.
