Students protest abduction of MUSU Chief
A Life came to a grinding halt in Manipur during the 24-hour
bandh called by the Manipur University Students・ Union (MUSU) after its
president Kh Ashokumar of Heirok was abducted. All inter and intra state bus
services were suspended due to the strike. All business and educational
institutes remained closed and thin attendance was reported in government
offices. The Khwairamband Keithel, the main market of Manipur, was
completely closed. Police and security personnel were stationed at
key locations in the State in view of the strike. The MUSU Chief was taken
away forcibly by suspected members of the People・s Liberation Army (PLA)
from the union・s office in Canchipur. Four others, who were in the room of
the President, were also beaten up by the suspected militants. The All
Manipur Students・ Union (AMSU), Manipur Students・ Association of Delhi (MSAD)
and Democratic Students・ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) were also supporting
the strike.
National Games a prestige issue for State:
Kapil
Legendary cricketer Kapil Dev has urged the people of Assam
to put their hands together in order to host the forthcoming National Games
successfully. The former Indian captain said that it is matter of prestige
for the people of Assam and if the Games can not be organised in a befitting
manner the country will laugh at them. The State Government should take the
responsibility of raising funds as the government invited the Games to the
State, he said.

AFMS
Vice-Admiral VK Singh, Director General of the Armed Forces
Medical Services (AFMS) inaugurated the CT Scan Centre at the 151 Base
Hospital in Guwahati recently. He said that the AFMS has paid special
attention to the insurgency prone areas like North-East. :We are providing
extra medical equipment, doctors and medicines to those areas for minimising
the chances of loss of life,; he said.
ANVC denies truce call-off
Outlawed ANVC has denied reports that it has threatened to
call off its ceasefire with the government and return to the jungle as
reported in the media. Publicity secretary of the outfit Arist Sengsrang
Sangma said that the news report was incorrect. He said that was misquoted
by a section of the press and reiterated that the ANVC was keen to begin
political dialogue with the government. :We have neither threatened to back
out of the ceasefire nor do we intend to do so in the near future
despite having to face several constraints from the government side,; he
said..
Regional parties should unite
Former Assam chief minister Prafulla Mahanta has stressed
the need of co-ordination between all the regional parties in the North-East
to take on the national parties. Mr Mahanta said that his present task was
to strengthen all the regional parties as the people have more trust in them
than the national parties. He said that efforts were also made to tie-up
with leaders like the former Meghalaya Chief Minister E K Mawlong.
UN help for AIDS control programme in NE
To cope with the menace of HIV/AIDS in the North-East
region, a forum of the North-Eastern states will be constituted on November
19 under the aegis of the United Nations. Dr Dennis Brown, co-ordinator of
UN・s AIDS control unit in India recently met Assam Chief Minister and
briefed him about this initiative. The Chief Minister has assured all
possible Government help to Dr Dennis. He also emphasized on intensifying
the public awareness drives on the matter and also said that the government
is trying to include information about the disease in the school text books.
Mr. Gogoi also stressed the need of involving NGOs, Village and Anchalik
Panchayats and Zila Parishads in the endeavour.
NDFB: No links with ISI
The National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) denied that
it was seeking the help of ISI in its struggle for a .sovereign Bodoland・.
The NDFB has nothing to do with Pakistan・s ISI. We are struggling for the
liberation of Bodoland and freedom of Bodo people .against aggression・,
NDFB Secretary General Gobinda Basumatary claimed. Asked about the Boro
Territorial Council he said the Bodos felt it to be .insufficient・ in
fulfilling their aspirations. On the 2006 Assembly polls he said election
was not their aim.
Import of pigs banned
Nagaland has banned the trade in pigs from Uttar Pradesh
following reports of pig deaths due to Japanese Encephalitis.
