Hot favourite for Indian Idol 3 title Amit Paul enthralled thousands of his fans with his immaculate rendition of popular numbers like Pehla nasha, Nasha ye pyar na nasha hain, etc., making them sing with him and dance to his golden voice at Mawlai Madan Heh Stadium and Polo Ground.

Breaking the barriers of caste, creed and religion, nearly 35 thousand people, both young and old, came out on the city thoroughfares before heading towards Mawlai Madan Heh Stadium and Jawaharlal Sports Complex to catch a glimpse of the singing sensation and watch him perform there. Al least 15 thousand music lovers thronged the Polo ground, surpassing all previous records of public turnouts at the venue even during concerts by various international bands. Mawlai Madanheh Stadium also witnessed the presence of about 20 thousand people for the first time.

School and college students were seen bunking classes and making a beeline for the venues of Amit’s shows. The Shillong boy’s maiden visit to Shillong since he joined the Indian Idol contest also threw traffic in the city out of gear for hours on end.

Dressed in Khasi attire, Amit sang a Khasi song, besides the popular pehla nasha, tere bina and swades that just rocked the motley crowd of men, women, young girls and children at the Jawaharlal Nehru Sports Complex.

Much to his delight, Amit saw nearly 20 thousand people eagerly waiting for him at the Mawlai Madan Heh Stadium. The artiste memorized them with his enchanting voice as he sang Nasha ye pyar ka nasha hain and other memorable Hindi songs.

The large gathering at Mawlai, the heartland of sub-Khasi nationalism, appeared to have justified the State Government’s declaration of Amit Paul as Meghalaya’s Brand Ambassador for Peace and Communal Harmony.

Earlier, on his arrival in the city, Amit went to his alma mater St. Peter School to meet his teachers. The school, which was having its mid-term examinations, postponed the day’s papers to enable its students to interact with him.

Amit next proceeded to Mawlai from where had received the highest votes, to ensure that he continued to get support of people of the area. The local MLA has already sponsored 40 PCOs to help Mawlai residents vote for Amit.

Kyndiah joins campaign for Amit

After the hoi-polloi, it is the turn of Union Tribal Affairs Minister, PR Kyndiah to jump into the campaign to garner support for Amit Paul in the Indian Idol contest. Kyndiah said he is proud of Paul who has been performing exceedingly well and has reached the top four in the reality show. “Now that he has reached the finals in the Indian Idol contest, I appeal to the young and the old of the North East to vote for Paul, so that he carries home the crown and make Meghalaya and North East proud,” he said. Kyndiah said despite his hectic schedule he has been keeping track of the reality show and voted for Paul every week. The young gifted and talented man deserves all the support. “When you vote for Amit you vote for talent,” he said.

Amit emerges as Meghalaya’s brand ambassador

Singing sensation of Indian Idol fame, Amit Paul, would be Meghalaya’s brand ambassador for “communal peace, harmony and excellence”.

State Chief Minister DD Lapang said his government was working to project Amit as the brand Ambassador of Meghalaya for his outstanding show in the singing competition till date. “We are all proud of Amit. He is performing exceptionally in the contest”, Lapang said. Amit is one of the three remaining participants in the singing competition.

The CM made the announcement after meeting music lovers from different communities from the State capital campaigning frantically for the Shillong lad. Amongst the different proposals discussed today was ‘sponsoring PCOs’ for uninterrupted voting for Amit, taking the cue from the hugely successful Assam example in case of Debojit Saha.

“Music washes away dust from the soul and helps build communal harmony. Amit is helping create bond between different communities through his music. It is a great situation where Amit has projected Shillong in a favourable light and we should all wholeheartedly back him”, the CM said.

Amongst others who spoke in the emotional meeting was the Chief Secretary Ranjan Chatterjee. The CS said he would be contacting his counterpart in West Bengal to garner support for Amit. “I would personally speak to my West Bengal counterpart in this regard”, he said.

The frenzy to ensure Amit’s victory has reached such a crescendo that suggestion to slash BSNL rates was also mooted. “We urge the CM to intervene so that BSNL rates are reduced to enable more people to vote for Amit”, said JL Das, spokesperson of Shillong Arts and Music Forum which is spearheading Amit’s campaign.

BJP legislator AL He said he had already sponsored five PCOs and urged others to follow suit. “This would facilitate a large number of people to vote for Amit and ensure his victory”, He added.

Numerous campaigns have been taken out in favour of Amit till date here and in Silchar, Assam. The city streets here are plastered with posters and huge billboards with Amit’s picture has been erected.
