Brindaban retained as AGP president

Assam’s
main opposition party Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) re-appointed Brindaban Goswami as the party president for the period 2007-2010. This was decided by a body of eleven party leaders.
As a formula to arrive at the consensus, these party leaders suggested that Choudury should be accommodated in the party central executive committee as the working president and for the purpose schedule 28 of the party constitution should be amended.
They also suggested that the AGP Legislature Party should elect a new Leader of the Opposition within September 7 next. At present, Goswami has been holding the post. The party leaders also suggested as part of their compromise formula, that Goswami and Choudhury should be authorised to nominate one member each to the central executive committee of the party and also to form the central executive committee jointly.
The delegates of the conference endorsed all the suggestions made by these party leaders with applause. This paved the way for resolution of a stalemate, marked with acrimony, over the leadership issue. The acrimony had even led to yesterday’s unsavoury incident of some of the party supporters perpetrating vandalism in the Machkhowa Pragjyoti ITA Centre for Performing Arts and even baying for Goswami’s blood. The members of this mob vouched their allegiance to Choudhury.
Following the endorsement of the suggestions of the eleven leaders by the delegates, the election commission appointed by the conference for the election to the post of party president, formally announced appointment of Goswami as the party president and Choudhury as its working president. On behalf of the election commission Jiten Das made the formal announcement.
After his re- appointment, Goswami reiterated his commitment to work unitedly with the other members of the party to strengthen the party and to give justice to all party members. He also sought cooperation from all members of the party to lead the party ahead.
Choudhury said in his address that going by the wishes of the delegates, the issue of party leadership was settled through discussion. He made an appeal to all the delegates to extend all sorts of help and cooperation to prepare the party for the ensuing panchayat elections. The party should come out with flying colours in the panachayat elections, he said.
Choudhury camp appointed Padma Hazarika, Kamala Kalita, Girin Barua, Bhupen Rai and Keshav Mahanta as its representatives to hold parleys with Goswami’s camp. Goswami’s camp appointed Nurul Hussain, Atul Bora, Joseph Toppo, Hiranya Konwar, Jatin Mali and Putul Barua, as its representatives for the purpose.
These party leaders, along with Goswami and Choudhury and other senior leaders of the party came to the conference hall with their decisions at 3 pm. Birendraparasad Baishya announced the decisions to the applause of approval from the delegates. The conference ended soon after the confirmation of the appointment of Goswami and Choudhury as the top functionaries of the party.
