After getting the nod from the Japan Bank of International Cooperation (JBIC), the forest department has initiated the process of implementing the much awaited Tripura Forestry Sector Development Project (TFSDP).

‘Expression of interest’ has been invited from experienced consultancy firms for providing general consultancy for the project being implemented in ten forest and wildlife divisions of the state with assistance under JBIC loan package. The duration of the project is eight years starting from 2007-2008 with a total estimated cost of Rs. 361.60 crore. The tender will be opened on April 5 next. The three-and-a-half-year consultancy is to assist the executive body in improvement of processes and procedures for project implementation and to provide overall consulting service to the body on technical and managerial aspects as well as policy initiatives related to the project implementation. It may be recalled that after exploring all aspects, the JBIC has agreed to sanction the TFSDP. The forest department has also submitted a project proposal namely ‘Tripura Forest Improvement and Poverty Alleviation Project’ for consideration of Japan Bank for International Cooperation. The project is proposed to be implemented in West Tripura, South Tripura and North Tripura districts over a period of eight years.

The primary objective of the project is to alleviate poverty of the forest-dependent people in general and shifting cultivators in particular by improving the stocking, composition and productivity of the forests for increased flow of goods and services in a sustainable manner and by taking up suitable alternative income generating activities for them. The Special Assistance for Project Formation team for JBIC conducted a detailed study in the state and submitted the draft final report in the last week of August, 2006.
