’ISI fomenting violence in NE’ ASSAM Rifles chief Lt Gen H. S. Kanwar believes Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) is still active in fomenting violence in the region. It (ISI) is employing front organisations like the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) to carry out its nefarious activities. Kanwar doesn’t visualise any let up in the ISI activities in the region. In fact, there can be a step up as a part of their long-term anti-India policy, he opines. About IM, his view is that the Naga group may still be maintaining relation with ISI. “The tie-up could be more of a strategic option as an insurance for the group’s support mechanism in the event of a ceasefire breakdown, says the General, who is also the advisor to the North East Council (NEC) He appreciates the ongoing peace process in Nagaland pointing out that the ceasefire with the Naga militant groups such as one with the NSCN (IM) had been playing its role as a catalyst in restoring peace in the state and the peace process seemed to be going in the right direction. Ruling out any military threat from China, the General adds there is no unusual activities along the Indo-China border and the relations of India with China are improving, which are being focussed in economic consolidation. The General reviewed the
attestation ceremony of 227 recruits of the Assam Rifles and met the
surrendered activists of NSCN, NDFB and others.
