Learn 3 R’s, Rio tells Nagas

NAGALAND Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio is on a literacy mission. His message to fellow Nagas is learn the Three Rs – reading, writing and arithmetic. Higher literacy rate will have a positive impact on the society, he is telling. His dissatisfaction with the present state of ‘education affairs’ was in full public display when he released a book  on one year of communitisation of elementary education in the State. He asked his officers to pay attention to quality education, and not ‘quantity’ education. Emphasising that the success of communitisation would depend on the awareness of the system in the grass-root level, Rio called upon the officers to monitor the implementation of the programme and highlight the success stories. He also urged them to take remedial measures for which regular co-ordination meeting of Village Education Committee (VEC) to review the process of communitisation was a must. Hoping that with the implementation of the process in the right direction illiteracy would be eradicated from the State, the Chief Minister declared that the Democratic Alliance of Nagaland (DAN) Government was taking necessary steps to communitise all elementary schools in the State by January 2004. He also said Government aimed at communitising other public sectors like water supply, tourism among others soon.
