DAN Govt banks on electoral reform To ensure fair and
expenditure free elections in Nagaland, the Democratic Alliance of Nagaland
(DAN) Government has drawn up an ambitious plan. Under the plan, the State
Government would sponsor a team of delegates consisting of NGO leaders and
representatives of mass based civil societies to observe the electoral
process in the coming Assembly elections of Mizoram, where elections were
mainly agenda based and expenditure was negligible. This decision was taken
at a recent meeting held between senior DAN Ministers and NGO leaders. The
delegation heading for Mizoram would include Naga Hoho leaders and
representatives from all the districts. The plan of the State Government to
carry out electoral reforms in Nagaland was a big step, said Naga Hoho
general secretary Dr John Murry. All sections of the people from the common
man to elected leaders will have to change their attitude and envision a
better Naga society for the reforms to be successful, he added. Elections in
Nagaland have always been an expensive affair. Candidates are known to spend
enormous amount of money during campaigns. Meanwhile, unidentified
assailants gunned down a youth from in old Tata parking area of Kohima.
Police sources said the victim was yet to be identified and the body bore
four bullet marks of 9 mm pistol. Police registered a case and investigation
was on to identify the victim and to apprehend the culprits, sources added.
In another incident, Dimapur Police arrested one Sanjeev Kumar Dey at the
rail gate area of the town alongwith a country made .38 revolver and an
Italian make pistol from his possession. Police said the arrested person,
who was a bike mechanic, was also dealing with arms
