THE region is poor and backward but not its politicians. Thanks to the new directive from Election commission of India making it mandatory for the candidates to declare their assets, which brought to light this fact. As Mizoram went to the polls, it was time for the Mizo politicians to declare their assets and The Directorate of Election had duly received the affidavits of all the candidates.

As expected, with Rs. 4.5 lakh in cash his personal account from different banks amount to well over Rs. 10 lakh, is way ahead from his political colleagues. Hawla’s wife, Lalriliani’s financial spot among the ladies behind Mizo politicians is also up in front. She has over Rs. 7.2 lakh excluding personal effects like jewellery and vehicles worth Rs. 1.75 lakh. 

The current market value of the agricultural land and non-agricultural land owned by Lal Thanhawla amount to Rs. 46.32 lakh, including his huge residential mansion at Zarkawt, Aizawl. The market values his wife Rii’s land holdings amounting to Rs. 7.28. Beyond doubt, the couple is one of the most prosperous couples in Mizoram. 

It may be mentioned here that two charge sheet papers were submitted to the presiding judge under Prevention of Corruption Act, which is still pending.  Chief Minister Zoramthanga is down below Lal Thanhawla in terms of fiscal hierarchy. Rs. 2 lakhs in cash, another 2.09 lakh in his bank accounts. Zoramthanga’s immoveable assets ranging from commercial residence at Chaltlang in Aizawl, and land holdings worth Rs. 35 lakh. Zoramthanga’s wife Roneihsangi’s assets worth Rs. 9.2 lakh. 

Zoram Nationalist Party president Lal Duhoma, a former IPS officer including all bank accounts has Rs. 6 lakh and Rs. 65 lakh worth land holdings.  

Opposition leader and President of Mizo People Conference Lalhmingthanga’s financial accounts engrossed over Rs. 11 lakh. Adding to the accounts Lalhmingthanga’s immoveable assets worth Rs. 119.5 lakh is something his challengers can never take it for granted if we are to project values in terms of wealth.
