Manipur Opposition demands Ibobi’s resignation

The opposition Democratic People’s Alliance (DPA) in Manipur has demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh on moral grounds for his failure to book the guilty involved in the kidnapping and murder of eight-year old Elizabeth, daughter of Manipur GAD Minister Francis Ngajokpa  Lungnila. Elizabeth was kidnapped on November 4 near her school and her dead body was later recovered near Imphal on November 12 that evoked widespread condemnation from various quarters in the State. The people of Manipur are yet to recover from the shock.

Many organisations in the valley as well as hills have called for bandhs and strikes across the state  in support of their demand. Criticising  the Congress-led government in Manipur for its total failure in maintaining law and order, the leaders of the DPA including former Chief Minister R K Dorendra demanded arrest of the ‘culprits’ within a week or hand over the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Expressing concern over the ‘disappearance’ of the physical evidence into the kidnapping and subsequent killing of Elizabeth, he said, “Ibobi-led government should take the responsibility if the physical evidence disappears.’’ Former deputy Chief Minister and president of the Federal Party of Manipur Dr Leishangthem Chadramani blasted the ruling front for not protecting the lives of the citizens since it assumed office. “We are compelled to demand CBI investigation as we don’t want such heinous crimes to be repeated in our state.” President of Manipur people’s party O Joy Singh also lambasted the state government for their failure to maintain the law and order situation properly. “The attitude of the government clearly shows that Manipur has now become the land of lawlessness,’’ the middle-aged firebrand opposition leader noted.
