Nagaland to develop bamboo industry Bamboo is available in abundance in North-East and could emerge as a major revenue earner if developed as a industry. It will be one of major export items once trade with China begins through Nathula pass in Sikkim. In an effort to boost the bamboo industry in the State, Nagaland Forest Department is chalking out an ambitious plan by planting bamboo in 12,000 hectares of purchased land in various districts of the State. A decision to this effect was taken at a workshop held here recently and the concerned department had already identified four economically viable species of bamboo for plantation. The Technology Information, Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC) would give training on growing different species of bamboo in the state. The Survey of India (SI) would take up quantification and assessment of availability of bamboo resources. The TIFAC
would also coordinate with the state Forest Department for ground checking
after getting SI assessment. Field key tool to identify 12 bamboo species of
the North-Eastern region would be supplied by TIFAC. Out of the 12
identified species in the region, seven were found in Nagaland. The Council
would also provide preservation and treatment manual. The State Industry
Department would identify bamboo based industries and interested
entrepreneurs, and approach TIFAC for necessary technical and financial
help. |
