Centre to remove hurdles to help implement hydel-power project in Arunachal In an attempt to address the power shortage in the State, the Centrehas assured Arunachal Pradesh that it will withdraw the stringent conditions for setting up National Parks, which are obstacles for implementation of hydro-electric projects on river Subansiri. The assurance was given at a high-level meeting at Delhi recently. The Arunachal authorities are facing problems in the execution of 2000 MW Lower Subansiri Hydel Project. Construction of the park would not only displace people but also obstruct development of agriculture and horticulture and prevent the construction of middle (1600 mw) and upper (2000 mw) Subansiri projects. Arunachal
has a potential of generating 50,000 mw hydel power. Prime Minister Atal
Bihari Vajpayee has also expressed his willingness for the generation of
environment friendly power to meet the ever growing demand for power. To
meet the country’s present power shortage of one lakh mw, the Centre is
giving priority for the generation of hydro power to discourage thermal
power production as well as reduce its impact on global warming. |
