NCP files affidavit against six Meghalaya defectors THE Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has filed a case in the Supreme Court against six of the party Legislators, who recently merged with the Congress in Meghalaya. According to state NCP president E K Sangma and Opposition leader A K Sangma, both now camping in Delhi, the party had signed the two required affidavits in this regard. Though the case was supposed to be filed much before Christmas, there was a delay in preparation of the draft, which was finetuned by the lawyers involved in the case, the NCP said. The NCP also maintained that the advocates were awaiting the gazette notification of the anti-defection Bill, which was approved by parliament on December 18 last year. The party was of the
opinion that the defection by the six deserters could not be recognised as
the NCP being a national party, the split must be affected in the original
party. The party hoped all the six MLAs would be disqualified under the
Bill. Breakaway group leader Cyprian Sangma said if the NCP decided to
approach the court, “we will also have to fight it.’’ The defectors sounded
confident that the Meghalaya Speaker had recognised the new group Meghalaya
Nationalist Congress Party (MNCP), a day ahead of the Rajya Sabha’s passing
the Bill. The Rajya Sabha passed the bill on December 18 last year and the
MNCP had been recognised on December 17. |
