Assam University to set up campus at Diphu

LACK of instutions offering higher education force thousands of students from North-East to migrate to other parts of the country every year. There is a growing demand to set up more universities across the region. The long-standing demand of  the people of Karbi Anglong to have a university campus will be fulfilled soon as a UGC has decided to set up a campus of Assam University at Diphu in Karbi Anglong.

The university campus will be set up at Diphu under the direct administrative control of the Assam University, Silchar. Initially the university would function from Diphu Government College and later be shifted to the permanent building. A UGC team visited the site recently and held discussions with various organisations, both political and non-political. They also held discussions with the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC). The leaders of the Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC) also met the team and placed their demand for early setting up of the university campus at Diphu. The KAAC will allott land to the university authorities for setting up of its satellite campus at Diphu. The construction work is expected to be completed within a few years under the direct supervision of the Assam University.
