Manipur gears up to counter ISI threat

TAKING cognizance of the increasing activities of the Inter Services Intelligence in Manipur and Jehadi acitivites in Bangladesh, the Manipur Government is contemplating on the measures to be adopted to tackle the problem and will hold detailed discussions in the next State Level Apex Security Co-ordination Committee meeting. The State Government has taken serious note of the increasing ISI activities in the State following the largescale recruitment of Jehadis in Bangladesh, during the 7th State Level Apex Security Co-ordination Committee meeting chaired by the Chief Minister last month. The meeting also agreed to set up police check posts along the routes that are used to supply essential commodities such as food and other items to underground outfits. It was also agreed to implement the Manipur Preventive Detention Act 2003 in due course.

Even though no definite actionplan was spelt out on how to counter the activities of the ISI during the meeting, it was agreed that the matter would be discussed threadbare in the next meeting. The State DGP has admitted that while situation continues under control, kidnapping, extortions, use of IEDs by ultras are continuing. Police in close co-ordination with the Central security forces have however been able to achieve a moderate success against the ultras, the DGP claimed. The Chief Minister has instructed the security officers to sanitize the entire valley area to bring about a sense of security among the people. He also urged the security personnel to take  advantage of prevailing mood of the people against the militants and launch result oriented Counter-Insurgency operations. The DG said that co-ordinated action to launch CI ops would continue in identified areas and house to house search operations on specific information would continue. National Highways and routes leading to militant hideouts would also be kept under strict vigil. It has also been agreed to expedite the construction of company posts at Barak, Maku and New Kaiphundai on NH-53 by the Manipur Police Housing Corporation.
