More central forces for south Assam THE Union home ministry has decided to deploy additional security forces in the Cachar and N.C. Hills districts of South Assam. The decision was taken in the wake of the need to prevent fresh ethnic flare-ups in NC Hills district and to check infiltration of insurgents into Cachar and Karimganj from neighbouring Bangladesh. During the past four months, the NLFT rebels have abducted at least six persons for ransom across the border into Bangladesh from Karimganj district. The same
rebel group has increased its network in Cachar district. Several of its
leaders frequently visit Silchar, with their camps in the dense forest belt
of Nibhia, Cheragi and Rongpur area bordering Bangladesh from the Karimganj
side. |
