ANVC targetting non-garos
ANVC appears determined to prevent non-Garos from entering local election
scene. The banned outfit has been openly spoken of its opposition and it
assumes significance as the elections to the Garo Hills Autonomous District
Council (GHADC) and the Lok Sabha are due early next year. In a communiqué
to the local press, the ANVC has stated that the outfit will not permit a
single non-Garo to contest any election from any constituency in the Garo
Hills. The ANVC has also urged all political parties in the State to refrain
from nominating non-Garos as their candidates, saying that Garo Hills
belongs to the Garos and they will not be governed by non-Garos. The outfit
has held out a threat of stern action against any political party or
individual who violate the diktat. Although most of the Garo constituencies
are reserved for the Garos, there are a few Assembly constituencies in the
plain belt like Mahendraganj, Rajabala and Phulbari which are open seats
allowing any candidate, to contest. Constituencies such as Tikrikilla,
though reserved, usually elect either a Rabha or a Boro as their
representative given the fact the either of the two tribes are in a
majority. In the recent Assembly elections to Meghalaya, non-Garos were
elected to Mehendraganj, Phulbari, Rajabala and Tikrikilla constituencies.
District Council has 29 elected members and one nominated member. It too has
a few ‘open’ constituencies. A large number of non-Garos tend to contest
from these constituencies. This is not to the liking of the militant outfit.
