Better deal for Manipur's Ex-ultras

Manipur Police will prepare a list of former underground members who have give up arms to avoid any harassment by the security forces, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Y Joy Kumar Singh said. Singh said that in view of the claims that former underground members were being harassed, police would prepare a list of these former ultras to avoid any action on them. He said parents should bring these former ultras along with them with three passport size photographs and register their names at the nearest police stations. After such a list was prepared, the same would be provided to all the security forces in the State so that these individuals could continue to live a normal life freely and without fear, Singh said.

According to Joy Kumar, Manipur Police is contemplating to set up a flying squad to check illegal trading in the Imphal-Moreh route following seizure of Rs. 1 crore worth of  precious stones and gems from Khudengthabi near Moreh. Search operations would be intensified in the route from now on. "Such a huge haul clearly indicates that the business has been going on for a long time now. It is high time that such illegal practices are stopped," he said. Expressing concern over the involvement of the officer-in-charge of Moreh police station in the incident, Joy Kumar stated that involvement of officials in some other departments in such cases could not be ruled out. He said the driver of the car said the consignment was carried by him on the orders of Deepak Singh, a businessman in Imphal, who contacted him on August 22 last. He said he was on his way to deliver the same to Singh. The other police personnel had no idea of the presence of the stones in the car, he said. But it’s nearly impossible that the whole event took place without prior knowledge of the OC, said Joy Kumar and praised the Assam Rifles who had seized the 400 kg consignment of precious stones valued at more than Rs one crore. These included 250 kg of ruby and 150 kg of sapphire. The OC of Moreh police station, two constables and one home guard were on board the two cars when the Assam Rifles intercepted it. All of them were placed under suspension, while the businessman Deepak Singh as arrested and handed over to the Moreh customs along with the gems.
