Bodo ultra's on extortion spree The National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB) has served extortion notices to a large number of people, including cultivators, teachers, traders etc., in Greater Nadwar area in Sonitpur district. The demanded amounts, termed in the NDFB notes as "Boroland tax" range from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 2 lakh. While financially well-off cultivators have been asked to pay Rs 1 lakh each, teachers and well-established traders have been asked to pay Rs 1.50 lakh and Rs 2 lakh each respectively. Some of the villages where the writ of the Bodo outfit runs are Mahalakshmi, Joysidhi, Borpam, Dalsaguri etc. Meanwhile, a great deal of sensation prevails in the area following the reports of the recent killing of a senior Congress leader and a bus passenger, and release of an abducted trader reportedly after the payment of a huge amount of ransom, etc. It may be mentioned here that the police and security forces had busted a number of hide-outs and killed a number of cadres of the NDFB in the reserved forest under Gohpur, Biswanath Chariali, Sootea, Dhekiajuli and Rangapara police stations in Sonitpur district along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border in the recent past. The outfit had to stay subdued for a short period after the crackdown by the security forces. But, of late, it has intensified its activities in the area again. | Assam | North East Enquirer (Headlines) | Nena Home Page | |
