Tripura not for POTA

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar has said that his Government would not enforce POTA in the State. He felt that the existing National Security Act (NSA) was sufficient to curb militant activities in the State. The Chief Minister refuted the opposition allegations that the NSA was being misused in a partisan way against the opposition activists. Denying the allegation, Mr. Sarkar claimed that there was not a single incidence of NSA misuse against his opponents.

The NSA was brought into force in Tripura under direction from the Centre despite Left Front’s ‘on principle’ opposition to this ‘draconian law’. Prime Minister A B Vajpayee and Home Minister L K Advani prevailed upon the Chief Minister to enforce NSA at the height of militancy.
