Airport terminal building inaugurated in Mizoram

Dr C. P. Thakur, Union Minister for Department of the North Eastern Region (Doner), has inaugurated the Rs 12.46 crore airport terminal building. Constructed by the state public works department, the building is designed to cater to about 1,000 passengers. While the ground floor consists of big lounges for outgoing and incoming passengers, VIP lounge, security check area, snack bar, shops, offices and reception, the mezzanine floor consists of viewing gallery, a restaurant, a conference hall, and offices for airport staff and the customs personnel.

Building has various services like fire detector, alarm system and air blower. It is air conditioned. The total cost of the airport including runway amounted to Rs 118.97 crore. Thakur said that Rs 10 crore has been provided by the North Eastern Council (NEC) for enhancing facilities at Lengpui airport and also to improve air connectivity with Guwahati and Kolkata. “I hope that with strategic location and geography of the airport, it would soon be upgraded into an international airport,’’ he said.

Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga is happy that his is   the first state government to own and maintain an airport in India owned and maintained by the State Government.

Zoramthanga expressed the  hope that the Centre would    provide more funds to improve the airport. Chief Secretary H. V. Lalringa, presided over the inauguration function, which was  attended by ministers, legislators, top officials and villagers of Lengpui, among others.
