Al-Qaeda training North East militants

The NE militants including ULFA, presently based in Bangladesh, are being trained by the al-Qaeda militants with the help of Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence (ISI), the operational head of the United Command Structure, Lt General Mohinder Singh.

The General, who is also the commander of the 4 Corps, said till date Bangladesh has been providing a safe haven for the NE ultras. “Dhaka denies any wrong doing on its part but we know ISI is running at least 90 militant camps in Bangladesh.

In his view, illegal migration will be a major problem in the days ahead. The Government of India has been raising the issue with the Bangladesh at the diplomatic level.

Lt General Mohinder Singh opined that the ISI had equipped the ULFA with the Chinese made 60 mm mortars. This is a conclusion based on the recent ULFA’s mortar attack on key installations in Guwahati including at the Lok Priya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport. He said the Chinese mortars can strike targets at a distance of 400 metres to 1.5 Kms. Based on the intelligence inputs, it appears that ULFA has moved its latest mortar acquisition from Guwahati to the West Garo Hills district in Meghalaya.

Commenting on the Operation Samsheer launched in Meghalaya with the help of police, the GOC said the operation was a partial success.. Although no militant has been apprehended, large quantities of arms and ammunitions and rations have been seized, he said.
