AASU raps Centre, Gogoi for B’deshi influx The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has taken to task the Centre and the State Government for the unabated Bangladeshi influx to the State. Observing that the influx was a result of non-implementation of the Assam Accord, AASU said Delhi and Guwahati have remained mute spectators for their own vested political interests. Severely criticising the various political parties including BJP, Congress (I) and the AGP for not forcing the implementation of ‘historic’ Assam Accord, the AASU president Prabin Kumar Boro said that vote bank politics have ruined the democratic set-up of the country. “These political parties are not taking any initiative to pressurize the Central Government to implement the Assam Accord as they fear that by doing so they may lose the confidence of Bangladeshi voters.” He pointed out that as per understanding at the last tripartite talks (between Centre, State and the AASU), the state Government should hold a meeting with the AASU on the first Wednesday of every month to review the pace of Accord implementation. But the State Government has not convened even one meeting for the past one year, he alleged, challenging the Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi to publicly announce what he had done on the Assam Accord. Referring
to the Centre’s steps to check the recent Bangladeshi influx into West
Bengal, Mr. Boro said, “The Centre is adopting double standard in this
matter when it comes to Assam. |
