BJP burns effigy of Madani
Bharatiya Janata Party burnt Jamiat Ulema leader Asad Madani's effigy for threatening to overthrow the elected government in Assam. The BJP said he was trying to use religion for political means. Condemning his statement the party said Mr Madani could dare to do so because of the 'continuous appeasement' of minorities. Mr Madani had recently threatened, in the presence of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, to 'dethrone' the Congress government if the 18-point demands of the minorities were not met within six months. Mr Gogoi had said in the same meeting that he would fulfil his constitutional obligation as a democratically elected chief minister and will not care for his re-election as the chief minister.

New Bill for fiscal management in Assam
Assam government has brought in a new Bill to stop financial irregularities. The new Bill will provide more teeth for punishing the erring officials. 'Fiscal Responsibility Budget Management Bill' was introduced by Minister of State for Finance Himanta Biswa Sharma seeking to end the age-old system of spending excess money by the department and later getting the approval from the Assembly through the Appropriation Bill. Once the Bill comes into force, each department would have to spend the money in better order and can then ask for more allocation through the Assembly. For any misappropriation of budgetary allocation, the erring officials would be punished with three-year imprisonment. Terming it as a 'Magna Carta' of Assam's sagging finance, Mr Sharma also informed the house that there would be no appointment without any post. Anybody involved in such errors would be caught at a later stage and a three-year punishment would be slapped.

Manipur to crack down on Meitei activists
Finally the Manipur Government has decided to empower the police and paramilitary forces to shoot at sight activists demanding the replacement of the Bengali script with Meitei in the State and has started classifying them as "terrorist gang" under Article 2(1) (L) of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Amendment Act, 2004.
