Patil favours talks to solve border disputes

Minister Shivraj Patil has said India would like to ''depend on the
friendship and understanding'' with China to resolve the boundary issue .
Reacting to Ambassador Sunyuxi's remark that Arunachal Pradesh was a
disputed area, he said,
''After the meeting we would first like to depend on the friendship and
understanding to solve such issue.'' Mr Patil, said security measures in the
area were adequate. ''Our forces are strong enough to take care of all these
things,'' he added. Top military officials briefed Mr Patil and special
secretary (internal security) Anil Chaudhury for almost an hour on the
security situation.
Mr Patil, who concluded a four-day visit to Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh
recently said that the Centre was in favour of a mechanicism to ensure that
problems do not ''escalate''. ''We have told the police and district
officials to talk. If needed Home Ministers should also talk so that
problems of inter-state border disputes do not esclate,'' he informed Mr
Patil, during his visit to the border state of Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh,
said the Chief Ministers informed that law and order situation was good and
peaceful. However, they suggested that the police machinery should be
strengthened to meet future
challenges. The two state goverments were also in favour of starting border
trade with adjoining countries and the Centre would 'look into issue', the
Home Minister said.
Mr Patil along with state Chief Minister Gegong Apang, Chief Secretary Ashok
Kumar director general of Police, ITBP, BSF, army core commanders, NEC and
tourism secretaries visited Twang . The Union Home Minister announced Rs 10
lakh for maintenance and renovation of Twang Monastery school and Museum. He
later placed wreaths at a war memorial to soldiers, who died during the
Chinese invasion on 1962.
