Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka visits Tripura Indian High Commissioner in Dhaka Veena Sikri visited discussed various bilateral issues including border trade and communications between India and Bangladesh, with officials of the Tripura government. Tripura had been demanding introduction of border trade and direct bus service between Agartala and Kolkata via Bangladesh and transportation of various commodities and machineries through Bangladeshi land and waterways. The straight-line distance between Agartala and Kolkata via Bangladesh is only about 350 km while the distance from here to Bangladeshi capital is 150 km. At present there are seven Land Customs Stations (LCS) along the 856-km Indo-Bangla border with Tripura and out of seven LCS three are operational. These include Akhaura and Srimantpur in West Tripura while Raghna in North Tripura. During the last financial year exports worth of Rs 1.50 crore and imports valued at Rs 9.80 crore had taken place between Tripura and Bangladesh. The exports dry fish, raw hide and skin of animals, coir mattress, fruits while hilsa fish, small fish, broken stone, ceramic tiles and milk powder make up for the imports. After the Bangladesh government decision to issue double entry visa to the Indians, a large number of people from Tripura and other North Eastern states visiting Kolkata and other parts of the country via Bangladesh taking the advantage of the Agartala-Dhaka and Dhaka-Kolkata bus service.
