Gogoi urges Ultras to contest polls Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has called upon militant outfits, including the banned ULFA and NDFB, to shun the path of violence and contest elections in the state. Addressing a rally of Congress workers, Mr Gogoi said: ''Anyone interested in serving the down trodden in the country should aspire to get elected to power by the people of the country. ''I appeal to ULFA and NDFB to give up violence and become part of the Indian democracy by trying to get the people's mandate in polls.'' Asking for an end to violence in Assam, the Chief Minister said: ''Development is not possible if peace remains a far cry in the state. If militants want to see people prosper, they should shun violence.'' Taking a dig at the opposition parties like , AGP and BJP, the Chief Minister said: while these parties were looking towards the seat of power at Dispur, the ruling Congress was embarking on a mission to bring ''the light of development to the doorstep of village households''. AGP and BJP were into the habit of raising alarm over the problem of infiltration and demanding scrapping of the IMDT Act, which is aimed at safeguarding the minorities, he said and wondered why these issues were raised only when elections were in the offing. Further saying that his party doesn't need to ride on Bollywood's shoulders, Mr. Gogoi ridiculed BJPfor showcasing of yesteryear's stars like Hema Malini and Dharmendra, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said that Congress does not need borrowed halo from Bollywood. Mr Gogoi said, ''For me and the Congress, the daughter-in-law in the village household is Hema Malini while the farmer is Dharmendra. The party is thriving on the strength of their support.'' Mr Gogoi said the Congress valued the support of rural masses immensely and his government was going to launch a special rural development services and rural health services in the state.
