Poor medical infrastructure in NE

Five North-Eastern states, including Nagaland, do not have any medical college though the country boasts of a total
of 229 such colleges.This information was given to lone Lok Sabha member from Nagaland Wangyuh Konyak by Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Panabaka Lakshmi to his unstarred question about the number of
medical colleges in the country. He also wanted to know whether the Medical Council of India had received any proposul from the Nagaland government for establishment of a medical college. The other four NE states without medical colleges are Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura.

In a release Mr Konyak said he had asked the Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare to furnish the number of medical colleges in the country and the number of states without those. He said replying to the question, the Minister of State gave the
information recently. She also informed that Maharashtra had the highest number of medical colleges with 38, followed by Karnataka 31 and Andhra Pradesh 27.
