THE Directorate of Field Publicity is one of the most important Departments of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India. Started way back in 1956, this Department is not only disseminating the policies and programmes of the Central Government, it has also played an important role in creating awareness on some important social issues among the people living in the rural areas. Although the advent of the electronic media has reduced the importance of DFP in the recent years, it has still some relevance to the society. Oral communication is the mainstay of the Department. This two-way communication cannot be ignored and replaced by any media. DFP is the only Department where there is two-way communication. Any social message that is communicated is immediately received back by the sender about the suitability and acceptance of the people of the message. However, with the passage of time, the role of DFP has changed over the years. Film shows, which was the most important activity of the DFP has been replaced with oral communication now. The Department takes up all the social issues pertaining to the people and organises publicity campaign throughout the country. The Directorate of Field Publicity, Assam Region organised several publicity programmes on important themes during the period from April 2003 to March 2004. One of the major themes was on AIDS. The Department organised
special publicity campaign on AIDS for four months from December 2003 to
March 2004 throughout the state in coordination with other state and Central
Government departments. The NGOs were also involved in this campaign. As is
known to everybody, out of all diseases that have afflicted man, AIDS is
considered as having the heaviest social and psychological impact on
humanity. There is no country, which is not afflicted by this dreaded
disease. While the rate of spread of AIDS is low in some countries, there
are many other countries where the rate of AIDS afflicted person is
increasing at an alarming rate. This demands immediate arrest of this
disease from spreading further. As part of concerted effort of the Central
Government to eradicate this disease from our country, DFP has joined the
nation-wide campaign. |
