Buying Myanmar rice
THE Union Government has agreed to buy 50 tonnes of rice from Myanmar every
year and the Manipur Government will construct a godown at Moreh to stock
the rice, State Food and Civil Supplies Minister Parijat Singh said. He
visited the border town to inspect the land allotted for constructing the
godown. Initially, New Delhi was reluctant to purchase rice from Myanmar as
there is surplus production in States like Punjab, Haryana and Andhra
Pradesh, but agreed to give the nod after taking local factors into
consideration, the Minister said. One plus factor is transportation cost
will be low to from Myanmar to Moreh when compared to the transportation
cost from far away Andhra Pradesh The proposed Moreh godown will have a
capacity of 800 metric tonne. “Earlier, the target was to build a godown
with a capacity of 1200 mt. But due to limited fund we stuck to 800 mt
only,” he said, adding that the godown would be constructed at Rs 30 lakh..
Sarkar pressure on Centre TRIPURA Government would ask the Centre to take up
with Bangladesh Government freezing the bank accounts of different insurgent
outfits of the State in the neighbouring country. “We have on several
occasions informed the Centre about insurgents using the soil of Bangladesh
and depositing money in the banks there in fake names”, chief Minister Manik
Sarkar said in Agartala. “I would ask the Central Government to take up with
Bangladesh regarding freezing of the accounts of the ultras in that
country,” he said. Sarkar said if any insurgent outfit of Tripura was
interested to open dialogue with the Centre in a third country then he has
no objection. “I will welcome it but the Centre should keep the State
informed about the development and everything should be within the framework
of Indian constitution”, he said. |
