ICAR project for North East farmers
INDIAN Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has launched a project to
ensure optimal use of weather forecast by farmers of the region to help them
raise their agricultural produces. The ‘Experimental Agro-met Advisory
Service’ will give four days weather forecast received from Delhi’s National
Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecast (NCMRWF) along with advisory
bulletins to different electronic media as part of its aim to help farmers
of the State, Director K M Bujarbaruah said. Farmers of North-East, which is
a humid area with maximum rainfall, have been at the receiving end due to
damages caused to crops by insects, the official said. If the forecast
reaches properly to the cultivators, their agricultural produce will
increase by 5-10 per cent, Bujarbaruah said. He said the Union Government
set up the NCMWF under the Department of Science and Technology to provide
medium range forecast to the farmers in addition to short and long-range
ones. These medium range forecast are given to the ICAR and analysed before
releasing to the media. |
