Over to NC hills

MIZORAM Government has requested the Centre and Assam to seek a solution to the ethnic clashes in North Cachar Hills. This will help safe return of refugees from Mizoram, Chief Minister Zoramthanga said.

More than 2,800 people had fled to Mizoram after clashes between Dimasas and ethnic Mizos like Hmars, Kukis and Baites since February. They are  given shelter in refugee camps set up in northern Mizoram. Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga said that he had taken up the matter with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. ‘I asked both of them to bring back normalcy so that the refugees, mainly Hmar community, should return to Assam,’ he said. H Laltanpuia, Mizoram People’s Conference (MPC) alleged that the Assam Government was responsible for the continued clashes by taking a discriminatory stand against the ethnic Mizos in that State. Laltanpuia also alleged that the relief measures taken up by the Mizoram Government for the refugees were inadequate and demanded better food and sanitation facilities at the refugee camps at the earliest.
