Congress sweeps
KAAC, NCHAC polls

North East News Agency

A divided ASDC virtually gifted both the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) and North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council Congress (NCHAC) to the Congress. The party gained an unassailable majority in North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) by winning 14 out of the total 23 seats in the council election results for which were declared. In Karbi Anglong district also, the Congress has emerged victorious by capturing 13 of the 25 seats. The total strength of the KAAC is 26. By claiming 13 seats, the Congress has ensured that it came back to power in the KAAC after 14 years. The ASDC came second with 9 seats while Independents won three. One of the two victorious Independent candidates is supported by the CPI-ML-backed ASDC(P) and the other is backed by Citizens Rights Protection Committee. In NCHAC by winning 14 seats out of the total 23 seats, the Congress is all set to form the Executive Council there.

To stop the Congress from winning, both the factions of the ASDC tried a last-minute reconciliation effort. A combined ASDC kept the Congress out of power from these two districts for many years. But a personal rift between two stalwarts Jayanta Rongpi and Holiram Terang made it easy for the Congress. The ASDC was split into two factions, ASDC(P) and ASDC(U). This division did not auger well during the last Assembly elections, when the Haflong seat was won by Congress candidate G. C. Langthasa, defeating an ASDC leader and former Chief Executive Member of the NCHAC.

In the 1996 elections, the ASDC won 15 seats in the 23-member Council while the Congress won only two seats. The rest were clinched by Independents. This time, the ASDC contested in 21 seats besides supporting Independent candidates in the other two seats.
