AMSU flays Swami’s statement in RS

All-Manipur Students Union (AMSU) has criticised the statement of Union Home Minister of State for Home Affairs I. D. Swami which was critical about the students’ body. The Union Minister in a statement in the Rajya Sabha stated that the Centre has registered a case against the students’ body.

The AMSU leaders were visibly unhappy and termed it as very unfortunate. Claiming that the Centre views every person in Manipur as a militant, vice-president of the AMSU Ingo claimed that the students’ body had taken the matter seriously and was ready to face it adequately as the step amounted to an effort to uproot it.  He stressed that AMSU was not a non-governmental organisation (NGO) taking funds from the Centre. Rather it is a democratic body which has its own constitution and holds elections regularly and was serving the people of Manipur in general and the students community in particular.

Former general secretary of AMSU Ch Chidananda said that AMSU did not recognise the claim made by  the Union Home Minister. He informed that the students’ body had not received any summons. Alleging that President’s Rule in Manipur had been indulging in scrutinising student bodies instead of taking up development works in the State, he regretted over the fact that the Centre had not taken any action against organisations making disturbances on the National Highways. Ch Chidananda denied any links between the AMSU and the undergrounds. Asking the Centre to expedite the developmental process in the State, the AMSU leader claimed stating that everyone was aware that the Bharatiya Janata Party roped in politicians having nexus with militants to form government.
