New ropeway in Sikkim to be functional soon

Good news for tourists visiting Sikkim. A ropeway between Deorali Bazar to the Secretariat building via the Assembly house in Sikkimwould soon be operational. Constructed at a cost of Rs 14 crore and built in association with Swiss company Doppelmayr the ropeway would be operated by the Damodar Ropeways and Construction Co (DRCC) Ltd.

The ropeway would not only attract tourists but also provide the city with an environment-friendly mode of transportation. It has been constructed within 24 months of commissioning. The ropeway will have a fully computerised safety mechanism of international standards, which will take care of the possible snags like mechanical and electrical failure and high velocity wind among others. The ropeway will have two cabins and can accomodate 24 passengers each and would cover a distance of around one km in six minutes time. The ropeway can carry 250 passengers per hour.

The terminal buildings of the ropeway have five floors, each which would be developed as tourist hubs with videogames among other entertainment products to attract tourists. The DRCC, which specialises in ropeway construction, has built ropeway in Himachal Pradesh and in Auli (Joshimath) in Uttaranchal.
