Assam CPI (M) changes stance on IM (DT) Act

The Assam unit of the CPI (M), which had traditionally supported the IM (DT) Act, changed its stance after the 17th State Conference. The conference was attended by West Bengal Chief Minister Bhuddhadeb Bhattacharjee among others. The change in stand came after the West Bengal Chief Minister expressed that the controversial Act was not needed as the Foreigners Act was enough to detect and deport illegal migrants.

After knowing the view of senior party leaders, the State unit of the CPI (M) issued a statement asking for some amendments to the Act as some vested interests are out to divide the majority and minority community in Assam. Previously the CPI (M) had defended the Act in toto. The AASU, AGP and the BJP opposed the Act while the Congress and the minority groups had strongly supported the Act. After the change in CPI (M)’s stance, issuing a statement the AASU welcomed the recent statement of the party and asked other parties such as the Congress to support the same line.
