Sikkim to be focus of Surajkund Mela The
Haryana Government has decided to make Sikkim its focus in this
year’s Surajkund Mela. The mela will be held for a fortnight, commencing
on February 1 2002. During the Mela, the traditional arts and culture, the
customs and dresses of Sikkim, lifestyles of the three main ethnic
communities will be showcased.The
Sikkim Government has also decided to put a grand stall where all types of
Sikkimese food will be available. Earlier,
in September 2001, Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Chamling, accompanied by
his Cabinet colleagues, MLAs and MPs, had visited Surajkund in connection
with the selection of Sikkim as “Theme State”. The Chief Minister
inspected the site for the erection of a permanent structure known as
“Apna Ghar” which will be utilised by the families of three ethnic
communities of Sikkim — Lepchas, Bhutias and Nepalese, as homes during
the Mela. The actual living in the Apna Ghar will convey a definite idea
about Sikkim’s culture and tradition, which includes the Chaupal,
Natyashala (Open-air theatre) and the artisans’ huts. A Sikkimese style
concrete traditional gate as a permanent commemorative structure will also
be constructed. A number of artists, artisans and craftsmen from the State
will participate in the Mela. Sikkimese
artisans and craftsmen will display their products, main attractions being
bamboo and cane works, woodcarving, thanka paintings, etc. |
