In a major haul of arms and ammunition, police have seized 270 rounds of ammunition of AK 47 rifles, allegedly procured by the ULFA to carry out violence before the Republic Day, from Chagalia on Assam-West Bengal border. Police officials in Dhubri claimed that a massive combing operation had been launched to nab ULFA militants hiding in the area. The State Government had
received an intelligence report about the possible plan by the ULFA's 28
battalion in Apardihing Reserved Forest at Tinsukia in Upper Assam to carry
out violence on the eve of January 26. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi had asked
the district administration in Dhubri and Tinsukia to take all precautionary
measures to foil any attempt by the ULFA to disrupt peace in the Northeast.
Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh had earlier asked the ULFA's top brass to
come forward for talks. Meanwhile, CPI National Executive member Pramod
Gogoi had said his party would demand complete border fencing with
Bangladesh, Assam, West Bengal, Meghalaya and Tripura during the 19th party
congress to be held in Chandigarh between March 29 and April 3. Northeast
Students Union (NESO) president Dr Samujjal Bhattacharyya has appealed to
all the militant outfits of the region to shun violence and come forward for
talks with the Centre. |
