There has been an alarming rate of increase in atrocities on women in Tripura. There have been 596 cases of atrocities on women in the State between 1998 and November 30, 2001. Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, also in charge of home department,  informed that  “generally, the atrocities are related to either dowry or misunderstanding within the family”. Out of the 596 cases registered so far, chargesheets have been issued in 483 cases, Mr. Sarkar said. “Final report have been issued  in 5 cases and investigations are on 65 cases,” the Tripura Chief Minister added.
