Biharis-Adivasis clash

Five persons, including two women, were killed and three others reported missing while 40 houses were burnt in the ongoing tussle between Adivasis and Biharis in Assam's Karbi Anglong district.

The Adivasis attacked a Bihari at Ganapathar village under Howraghat police station while he was returning from the field with his cows. The Biharis were preparing for retaliation when they were again attacked by the Adivasis with bows and arrows.Two persons were killed on the spot while three others succumbed to their injuries on way to hospital. Ten others have been admitted with serious injuries.The Adivasis went on a rampage torching 40 houses, most of them thatched, belonging to the Biharis.The dead have been identified as Sudama Chauhan (60), Lalmoti Devi (45), Ratan Chauhan (35), Ramavati Devi (55) and Nandlal Chauhan (60).

Tension has been simmering between the two communities since February 15 following a clash over some land dispute and the District Deputy Commissioner had constituted a Peace Committee to keep the situation under control.Deputy Commissioner Anurag Goel said the situation in the district was currently tense but under control.
