EVELOPMENT-MIZORAM-ECO FRIENDLY
Mizoram marches towards most eco-friendly state
                 
Along with the desire to top the literacy chart Mizoram also aspires to become the most eco-friendly state in the country.

Under the Chairmanship of Chief Minister Zoramthanga, the state cleanliness committee has had a notable achievement thanks to the co-operation from the Mizo people in general, institutions, churches and NGOs in particular.Starting from the Raj Bhavan to the secretariat and to all directorates, the cleanliness drive is now also being conducted in various schools and colleges across the state.

In addition to this, several NGOs, churches, NSS and NCC activists have been regularly conducting sanitation drives within their respective areas.Significantly, the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) Mission has taken initatives to launch a 'Clean School' programme whose primary objective will be to impart a cleanliness attitude among the students --cleanliness in the minds, bodies, clothes and keeping the schools clean.

''The cleanliness drive will not be only in the schools of capital city but also in all the districts of the state,'' SSA project co-ordinator Robert said The highlights of the programme including prizes for the tidiest school within each circle, tidiest student in each school, which will be selected every month and lastly, the tidiest school within
the district, he underlined.

''If we go on like this, it will not be long when the people of the advanced world will be amazed at our tidiness,'' the chief minister himself said recently and also claimed that Mizoram would be soon attaining the most 'cleanest state' in the country.

To inspire the public and as a part of the on-going drive, the Mizoram Journalist Association (MJA) members too regularly conduct cleanliness drive programme in the Aizawl press club area.

''As writers we need to set an example for others,'' Zodin Sanga, a senior journalist said. The social welfare department hasalso introduced various schemes for the self help group to participate in the on-going state's various cleanliness programme, in their respective districts.   Meanwhile, Kolasib District Magistrate has already ordered a ban on coloured and recycled plastic bags within his jurisdiction and said sale and stock of these items on the ground that these coloured and recycled plastic bags can not only cause hazards for the human health but also for the environment.
All the state village councils also tightened up their branches, in their respective locality to launch an awarness campaign on topic about 'clean Mizoram' among public. Government sources said under the Health & Rural Sanitation Programme, more than 3000 Public Urinal Sheds were constructed allover Mizoram as a part of the cleanliness drive and campaign on
health and sanitation.

The department also proposed to undertake more such work with the help of the requirement information given by various NGOs in their respective regions, the officials added.

Meanwhile, the Community Health Action Nework (CHAN) under the Salvation Army (SA) has invited NGOs, GOs and representatives of churches and SA corps to a programme of 'share vision meeting' for various development and cleanliness activities across the state. The Chief Conservator of Forest (CCF) H Ramhluna also informed that the state government is keen in stopping the slash and burn (Jhum) cultivation across the state for a very friendly environment.
