Assam to revive STATFED

Assam Government has decided to revive the Assam State Co-Operative Marketing and Consumers Federation Limited (STATFED). STATFED chairman Akon Bora hailed the State Governments’ decision to introduce various measures for the organisation, which had incurred loss since 1995.

By the initiative of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, state had constituted a sub-committee for the recovery of STATFED, with Health and Family Welfare Minister as chairman and five commissioners as members, Mr Bora said. He said the government had sanctioned Rs 8 crore in the first phase for the introduction of VRS scheme, which would benefit nearly 350 employees of the organisation. He informed that the home department had decided to come forward to allot supply orders worth of Rs 22 crore for the police and the home guards.

  He also revealed that the social welfare department of the state would give 50 per cent of the supply order under Prime Minister Gramya Yojna to STATFED, besides the education department has also order under the mid-day meal scheme.  While appreciating the government for exempting sale tax for the company, Mr Bora said the oil mill at Amingaon had started functioning since February, 2004 and steps had been taken to start operating three of its rice mills, which were closed for last five to six years.

The management had also planned proper use of land in commercial locations, by constructing commercial complex to earn revenue, he said. Regarding the allegations made by the unions about the non-payment of salary to the employess, he claimed that the basic salary was paid till recently to the employees of the head office and at present they are being paid 20 per cent more.
