Chakmas approach NHRC against AAPSU’s threat THE Committee for Citizenship Rights of the Chakmas of Arunachal Pradesh (CCRCAP) once again approached the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) against the threat given by the members of the All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union to massacre the Chakmas of Kokila, Papumpare district of Arunachal Pradesh. On July 11, a group of the AAPSU activists went to the
Kokila village and threatened to massacre the Chakmas of Kokila if they did
not leave the State by July 31. The CCRCAP alleged that when the Chakmas
went to the Arunachal Pradesh Police Battalion camp at Kokila, they simply
ignored their situation. The CCRCAP has requested the NHRC to direct the
State Government to provide security to the lives and liberties of Chakmas
and Hajongs and take appropriate legal action under relevant provisions of
Criminal Procedure Code and Indian Penal Code against those individuals who
threaten the Chakmas and Hajongs. The CCRCAP further appealed to the NHRC to
approach the Supreme Court for contempt procedures if the order of January
9, 1996 was not properly implemented. AAPSU TO INTENSIFY AGITATION The All
Arunachal Pradesh Students Union (AAPSU) has decided to intensify its
agitation for the resolution of the Chakma and Hajong refugee resettlement
issue for once and all. The AAPSU’s agitation has the support of the core
committee headed by Chief Minister Mukut Mithi which comprises all political
parties. AAPSU president Dominic Tadar said a delegation led by Chief
Minister would go to Delhi to meet the Prime Minister and apprise him of the
refugee problem in the State. The delegation would express its opposition to
the Election Commission’s directive to enroll the Chakma and Hajong refugees
in the State electoral list, Dominic said. He, however, denied reports on
the issuance of quit notice to the Chakma and Hajong tribes and alleged that
it was the handiwork of some Delhi-based Chakma organisations to malign the
democratic and peaceful agitation launched by the AAPSU. AAPSU general
secretary Maji Marging and core committee convenor Domin Loya, who were also
present, said that a meeting of the core committee would be held soon. |
