GREEN OSCAR FOR SHANTI PADA

Tripura born Shanti Pada Ganchoudhury, an expert on non conventional energy sources has won the prestigious "Green Oscar" Award. He shares the honour with Bunker Roy of Rajasthan. UK-based Ashden Trust presents the award annually. Both scientists received the honour – 30,000 pounds each- in person at a function in London on June 18.

Ganchaudhry’s father Nirapad was a police officer of Tripura. He had his early education in the state and moved to Kolkatta for higher studies. As a member of the State Planning Board, he was instrumental in setting up the N B Institute of Rural Technology, as a
nodal agency   for imparting technical knowledge to rural youth and the surrendered militants.

Ganchoudhury is presently the Director, West Bengal Renewable Energy Development Agency. His major areas of study included supply of electricity to the remote
islands of Sundarbans on sustainability basis. He is also a consultant of the United Nations and Advisor to the Jharkhand and Jammu and Kashmir governments.
