TRADE IMPASSE

With the border trade with Bangladesh still a one way traffic, the Tripura government’s Commerce and Industry department has urged the Centre to ease restrictions and facilitate a quick break through. The concern is compounded by new customs and sales tax levies, which reduced the inflow of items to a trickle from June 14.

Industries minister Pabitra Kar said about 34 items including processed food and cement bags, which have stopped coming to the state due to the imposition of the taxes. What has complicated matters is the failure of the Bangladeshi manufacturers to adhere to the
quality norms prescribed by the Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS). A certificate of quality standards is mandatory for any foreign goods to enter the Indian market.

According to Pabitra Kar, most Bangladesh exporters have agreed to comply with the BIS certification and some of them have already applied for certification from New Delhi.

“We will send a senior minister to Bangladesh soon once we get the necessary clarification from the centre to break the deadlock, he observed.
