The story of a social worker

What he himself claims as his hobby is now helping the Mizos to keep a tab on the weather.
It may sound strange but the fact remains that 88-year old C Rokhuma has developed his own instruments for weather forecast and support services in his house in an effort which lasted for fifteen years.''I took social work as a hobby during my younger days but now it has become a part of my life,'' C Rokhuma, a 1992 Padhm Shri awardee for social work revealed. ''I felt that I should try and provide for those requirements of the people, which are not available here, so I decided to open an meterological lab on my own,'' he added.

Mr Rokhuma has been maintaining a weather forecast register on daily, weekly, monthly and yearly basis on rain, temperature and other details from 1990. He has invented his own rain measuring instrument and named it 'Rwahtui Deheh'. He claims it is more accurate than most of the modern-day gadgets. From his experience, he can forecast the weather for the next ten
days. Even government officials and the media depend on him for inputs. He also maintains statistics on crops every year.
To set an example to the Mizo people, he has five rain harvested tanks around his house, with a capacity of more than 5000 litres. His love for social work does not stop at people. He has enveloped the world of birds and animals too. Mr Rokhuma has converted his two-acre land into a bird sanctuary. He grows vegetables and has planted fruit bearing trees, exclusively for birds taking shelter in his sanctuary. ''More than 1000 birds of different types visit my sanctuary every year'', he said. He has also bagged the American Biological Institute's 'man of the year' award.
