Letter snowballs into major crisis

A letter allegedly written by Arunachal Pradesh Environment and Forest Minister Newlai Tingkhatra to various
heads of departments in Tirap district, has snowballed into a major crisis in the state.

The minister in a letter on February 25 last had directed all theheads of departments not to entertain any developmental proposals sent by the chief of Chanu, Ozakho, Chattong and Longsom villages as decided by the common people.
Taking serious note of the letter, a delegation comprising representatives of all these villages under the leadership of the
chief raja (king) Hatwang Wangham called on the chief minister and asked him to drop Mr Tingkhatra from the ministry and to
expell him from the primary membership of the Congress party.Raja while terming the move of the minister as ?anti-people? and? anti-development?, warned of dire consequences if the government failed to take action against the minister.
There has been no developmental activities in four villages during the last five years and the question of swallowing of funds
in the name of development by the chiefs as alleged by the minister in his letter does not arise, Mr Wangham pointed out.
The content of the circulation has damaged the contents of the constitution and he has alienated the people of those villages, he
lamented.

Mr Wangham further stated that the content of the letter had defamed the age-old democratic institution of village council
with chief on the chair in regular councils. The villagers have every reason to challenge the notification and asked the minister to compensate for defaming our institution. The chief minister has assured to initiate an inquiry into the incident letter and termed the letter as unfortunate,he said.''We have asked Mr. Apang to constitute a committee to find out the reality whether any developmental schemes have been implemented in these villages during the last couple of years,'' Mr Wangham  added.
